41. hope

candlelight leans in a flaw of air

tipping shadows against common

objects, tripping their masks, craving

a softening of fears borne

concretely in midday glare

lovers’ eyes beat upon:

the extra flesh on stiff thighs

folds molding set frowns

calluses thick on finger rims.
